Pastor Keith's sermon plans for the coming weeks
Praying Our Way to the Cross: Disciple-Making Through the Psalms
Series Aim: Lent is not simply about giving something up. It is about being shaped into apprentices of Jesus —and learning how to help others follow Him too.
Each Psalm becomes both:
* a prayer for the soul
* and a step in disciple-making

Week 1 – First Sunday in Lent – Feb. 22, Psalm 32
“The Blessing of Being Honest with God”
Theme: Confession opens the door to transformation
Discipleship Focus: Encounter Christ
Disciple-making always begins with honesty before God.
Key Verse:
“Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven…” (v.1)
Disciple-Making Component
A disciple is not someone who never fails — but someone who brings their sin into the light.
Practice for the Week:
* Invite people to confession and renewal
* Encourage sharing testimony: “What has God forgiven you from?”
Disciple-Making Question:
What would it look like to help someone else experience the freedom of grace?

Week 2 – Second Sunday in Lent – March 1, Psalm 121

“Help for the Journey”
Theme: God is our Keeper
Discipleship Focus: Grow in Christ
Spiritual growth requires trust and daily dependence.
Key Verse:
“My help comes from the Lord…” (v.2)
Disciple-Making Component
Disciples grow by learning where to turn when life is hard — and disciple-makers teach others how to look to God.
Practice for the Week:
* Pair up spiritual companions
* Encourage prayer partnerships
Disciple-Making Question:
Who is walking through life without help — and how can you point them to the Lord?

Week 3 – Third Sunday in Lent – March 8, Psalm 95
“Don’t Harden Your Heart”

Theme: Hearing and responding to God’s voice today
Discipleship Focus: Live in Community
God forms disciples in worship and mutual responsiveness.
Key Verse:
“Today, if you hear His voice…” (v.7)
Disciple-Making Component
A disciple listens.
A disciple-maker helps others listen too.
We don’t harden our hearts when we stay connected in community.
Practice for the Week:
* Invite small group engagement
* Encourage weekly Scripture reflection together
Disciple-Making Question:
Where have you grown spiritually stubborn — and who could help you soften again?

Week 4 – Fourth Sunday in Lent – March 15, Psalm 23
“The Shepherd in the Valley”
Theme: Christ’s presence shapes us in suffering

Discipleship Focus: Serve with Christ’s Love
The Shepherd comforts us — and then sends us to comfort others.
Key Verse:
“You are with me…” (v.4)
Disciple-Making Component
Disciples learn to trust Jesus in the valley.
Disciple-makers walk with others through theirs.
Practice for the Week:
* Challenge the church to care for someone hurting
* A simple act of presence this week
Disciple-Making Question:
Who is in a valley right now, and how can you embody the Shepherd’s care?

Week 5 – Fifth Sunday in Lent – March 22, Psalm 130
“Out of the Depths”
Theme: Hope and redemption rise from desperation
Discipleship Focus: Persevere and Multiply Hope

Mature disciples learn to wait — and disciple-makers bring hope to others.
Key Verse:
“I wait for the Lord…more than watchmen for the morning.” (v.6)
Disciple-Making Component
People cry out from deep places all around us.
Disciple-makers become voices of hope and redemption.
Practice for the Week:
* Encourage sharing stories of God’s deliverance
* Invite someone back to church who has drifted away
Disciple-Making Question:
Who do you know crying “out of the depths,” and how can you lead them toward mercy?

Week 6 – Palm/Passion Sunday – March 29, Psalm 31
“Into Your Hands”
Theme: Surrender and trust at the cross
Discipleship Focus: Go and Make Disciples
The cross is not the end — it is the sending point.

Key Verse:
“Into your hands I commit my spirit…” (v.5)
Disciple-Making Component
Jesus surrendered fully — and then poured His life out for the world.
Disciples surrender.
Disciple-makers lay down their lives so others can live.
Practice for the Week:
* Invite commitment to mission
* Call people to take one step into disciple-making
Disciple-Making Question:
What would it look like for you to entrust your life to God’s purposes for someone else?
